Rain and Merlin

One thing I love about rainy days is that it’s the perfect weather to cozy up and cuddle with my little girl while doing a movie or series marathon. Today’s hit BBC’s Merlin.

It’s interesting how she can understand the accent for one since we’re used to American English, and she’s just 2, but also how she’s able to understand the story. At first she used to ask who were on the good side and who were the bad knights when they start their battle wearing their medieval breastplate, but slowly she became familiar with their suits. Even when they wear their spartan helmets, she already knows who is on Arthur’s side.

I for one don’t really care about the battles.  What I admire most about the show is the castle’s design and furniture and I can just imagine that their kitchen is like the one in Nanny McPhee.  Don’t you just love the kitchen from “older” eras?  I mean they always have those fresh breads in baskets, spices and leaves everywhere that you can just imagine how fun it is when they cook and just throw fresh basil, thyme… anything in their pots!

Also, it’s so amusing to see their pots just hanging everywhere.  In a lot of medieval shows I’ve watched, most of than not, the pots become weapons too!  I can just imagine how those must have hurt when they hit because back then their pots were probably made of heavier and sturdier metals.

Oh well, it seems Merlin is on break but I do hope the new season begins soon.  For now the show has given me ideas on how to arrange my kitchen when we move to our home too.  I would love to have a spacious kitchen just like the “olden” times.

Updating my kitchen

I am so addicted to watching the Australian Masterchef and Australia’s Junior Masterchef. I know they’re just reruns but it’s just amazing how they cook and how the end result is presented. I’ve compiled some of the recipes they cooked, especially those that have the ingredients available here. I hope in a couple of months I can try and cook some of them, but I’d love it I can make something really easy and fun with my little Missy.

But before I can go on a cooking adventure, I think an update on my cookware set, specially my bakeware and ovenware, is needed. Why do they need an update? Except for the pressure cooker which we invested on, all the other pots and pans here are the cheap kind. It’s the kind that burns food if you don’t watch what you’re doing even for just a couple of minutes. I opted to buy those when we first started living in our own home because of our limited budget.

Until recently I haven’t had problems cooking with them because I gave cooking my full attention.  Lately though, since my little Missy is in her terrible twos stage, I found myself burning garlic and onions because I constantly need to check what she’s doing.  Good thing I usually burn them at the saute stage so I can start all over again.

Now that she’s growing up and is showing signs of interest in cooking as well, or maybe it’s just habit that kids want to get their hands on what mommy is doing, I’d like to invest in a good set of non stick cookware.  I think I’ll benefit a lot from it especially if I’ll teach her how to do basic cooking in the near future.  Aside from cookware, most of the easy recipes I got from the show were baked, refrigerated, or frozen so I would also want to have assorted molds and cups, in all shapes and sizes, and also those little trolleys than can come with us when we go around the kitchen for our little projects. I’m so excited about all this.  Why? Because we’re looking at having our home built soon and with a new home comes new things, cookware included.  I’m sure the little girl and I will have such a grand adventure in our own kitchen, in our own home.
