What’s your calling?

I’ve always thought that maybe Cooking and/or Baking is my true calling in life. It’s not because I cook well or bake well, but ever since I was a child, I’ve been a fan of cooking and baking shows. I can watch for hours and hours and not get tired of trying to race my fingers to try and copy recipes.

When I was a child, I know my mom used to bake. I don’t remember what she baked, but I just know she baked because what I remember is the smell of freshly baked goodies. She’s also a great cook. A lot of my relatives ask her to cook their favorite meals because they can’t do it on their own, even if my mom gave them the exact recipe to follow. My mom is the kind of cook who doesn’t have secrets. That’s just the way she is.

Now that I’m a mother myself, I would also love to share those moments with my little girl. I hope to save enough to buy my own materials and gadgets, from the best mixers and bowls, to kitchenaid food processor parts, and of course the molds and sheets. I would love for my daughter to remember that baking and cooking is our special time together.

I’m loving the fact that even though my little one is just 3, she seems interested when I still watch my cooking and baking shows. Since she’s showing interest, I plan to pursue my dream, of baking and cooking with her. If it’s not MY calling, maybe it’s hers? If it still isn’t, then it’s still fine with me because I just know we’ll have such a blast together.

To Grill or Not To Grill

Enjoy grilling during Barbeque Parties

In most countries, where the weather is most of the times balmy, one can always find thousands of reasons to place those grillers out and hold an impromptu cookout. That said one will never go wrong with the charcoal grill, which is the simple and cheap alternative to the gas or electric types. One shouldn’t be dissuaded with the challenges of starting the grill as he will be soon rewarded with great gastronomic flare. Imagine how succulent and tender the meat remains even after being grilled to perfection. And with the way Filipinos do their grilling, perfection means having it well done and nothing in between. So where and how do we exactly begin this feast?

Great barbeques start from the perfect grill flame so it’s wise to assign those worthy of being called the grill kings. Your choice of meat is only secondary to how the meat is prepped for grilling and the basting needed. As charcoal grilling adds flavour to the meat, the basting on the other hand will ensure that the meat remains juicy and tender. Next on our list will be the condiments and sauces to complement the savoury flavour of our grilled meat. The staple ones will be cane vinegar with chopped onions, garlic, and lots of chilli, or soy sauce with freshly-squeezed lemons. No is ever complete without the steaming hot rice! And anything that is grilled is best served and eaten on fresh and crisp banana leaves. This may sound trivial to most but the banana leaves definitely add a distinct “grilliness” to the whole spread. Ice-cold beer is the preferred choice to quench and wash away flavour as you move from one grilled variety to another.

There’s really nothing fancy to these types of barbeque parties. With the people being generally festive-loving and highly familial, a simple gathering can always end up big and grand with the huge turn ups of friends, families, and extended families. It will always be a celebration of sort with the food—grilled food, that is, as the main attraction of the festivity.

So, fire up that grill and let the party begin!
